Kernel Latency Reduction

Thread prioritization is tuned so gaming and emulation tasks move directly to the front of the queue via high MMCSS priority.

Component Stripping

Z-LAG Toolbox is always installed from GitHub Releases as the official app / driver / tweak hub. It installs Win32 (EXE/MSI) apps, so even with Microsoft services removed, downloaded apps launch instead of crashing. The Alt App Installer is no longer used.

Installation guide

Follow these steps to transform your Windows installation into a high‑performance gaming environment.

Before you begin: Create a system restore point and make sure your active Windows profile is a Local Offline Account. Do not attempt installation while signed into a Microsoft email/PIN.

Navigate to the Releases section and download the .apbx playbook file.

Download and extract AME Wizard from amelabs.net.

Temporarily disable Windows Defender / Real‑Time Protection so the configuration scripts can execute successfully.

Launch AME Wizard.exe and drag the downloaded Z_LAG_OS.apbx file into the application interface.

Work through the verification prompts and pick your options on the radio pages (Browser, Defender, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, MS Store & Services). Let the deployment phases finish — the system restarts automatically to apply all kernel changes.
CRITICAL REQUIREMENT: Do NOT run this playbook on a Microsoft Account (MSA) login. Because Z LAG OS aggressively strips cloud authentication identity services for maximum performance, running this on an online Microsoft account WILL lock you out of Windows on restart. You MUST convert your Windows profile into a pure, offline Local Account via Windows Settings before proceeding.

Hardware recommendations

To maximize the efficacy of Z LAG OS, ensure the following hardware‑level configurations are met.

Disable HPET: Disable the High Precision Event Timer via Windows Device Manager to optimize frame pacing.
Ultimate Performance: Confirm the Ultimate Performance power plan is the active scheme after the first reboot.
GPU Driver Configuration: Set your NVIDIA or AMD control panel global power management mode to Prefer Maximum Performance, using a clean driver install.
Peripheral Optimization: Lock your pointing device polling rate to its highest native hardware capability (e.g., 1000Hz+).

Everything people ask before and after deploying the playbook.

No. It's a playbook (.apbx) that transforms a clean official Windows install via AME Wizard. No piracy involved.

It's no longer used. The playbook installs the Z-LAG Toolbox instead — the official app, driver and tweak hub. It installs Win32 (EXE/MSI) apps, so downloaded apps run even with Microsoft services removed.

The toolbox installer (1) downloads the latest release with retries, (2) verifies the file's SHA-256 digest, (3) smoke-tests the installed binary, and (4) pre-flights the packaged-app launch stack (LicenseManager, ClipSVC, AppXSvc, StateRepository) before installing anything. Every result — success or failure — is written to C:\ProgramData\Z-LAG-OS\toolbox_install.log plus registry markers, so nothing can fail silently.

The playbook keeps the Windows shell's own AppX runtime — LicenseManager, ClipSVC, AppXSvc, StateRepository — alive (those are part of Windows, not the Store), and a self-healing watchdog re-arms them on boot and logon. Microsoft account services (wlidsvc, TokenBroker) are left demand-only, so they add zero idle processes but can still answer if an app asks. To fix it manually, run repair_appx_runtime.ps1 as Admin:

Reboot and open the app. You still have no Microsoft Store.

Expected. Use the Z-LAG Toolbox to install apps, or keep the Store if you need Xbox services.

The hosts file blocks updates and the update service is disabled. If you later want updates, restore the hosts file first.

Only if you understand the risks. Keep it enabled for daily use; disable it only for tournament PCs sitting behind a hardware firewall.

No. Only pick the Wi-Fi disable option if you are on a desktop plugged in via Ethernet. Laptops should keep Wi-Fi.

Make sure HPET is off, the Ultimate Performance power plan is active, Game Mode is off if you're using the MMCSS tweak, and your GPU driver is a clean install.

What is Z LAG OS?

Z LAG OS is not a standalone custom Operating System ISO. Instead, it is an automated configuration Playbook built on top of the trusted AME Wizard framework. It allows users to transform a standard, bloated Windows installation into a streamlined, high‑performance environment optimized for ultra‑low latency.
